Expansion:
Solids expand the least and gases expand the most.
Effects of heat in our lives - Roads and pathways may crack. To solve the problem, tiles on pavements and walls have expansion gaps.
- Railway tracks may warp, thus, there are gaps in the tracks to allow them to expand.

- Bridges are at risk of damage in hot weather. Therefore, bridges and metal girders on buildings have expansion gaps or a free end resting on rollers to allow for expansion.
- Water pipes expand during hot weather and may cause them to burst. Therefore, expansion bends are made to allow the pipes to expand without damage.

- Telephone wire contract in cold weather and may snap when they contract. Thus, they are hung loosely to allow for the contraction.

- If boiling water is poured into a thick glass, the glass is likely to crack due to uneven expansion. Most of the glassware in the laboratory are made of a special type of glass that is less likely to crack when hot liquids are poured into them
Uses of Expansion:- Metal tyres: A metal tyre can be heated to fit over a wooden wheel. When the tyre cools, it clings on tightly to the rim of the wheel
- Rivets are used to join steel plates and girders

- Bimetallic strips is made when a strip of brass and steel are riveted together. Brass expands and contracts more than steel. Bimetallic strips can be used in thermostats or a bimetallic thermometer.
